On 2nd,Dec, East China Science and Technology said OLED screen cost was high because of high material cost, life expectancy and low yields. In the past 3~4 years, Samsung and LG invested a lot to promote OLED TV. Moreover, LG even defined y2014 as the first year for OLED development. But till now, the performance is not as good as expected. Samsung turned to push UHD. Panasonic, Sony and other former OLED members have quit from OLED camp, making LG weaker in OLED. Therefore, it was considered that the mainstream market is still TFT LCD panel in the next future period.
BOE vice president Zhang Yu has also said
that because of the high price of materials, life expectancy and low yields lead
to high cost of OLED screens. However, while the price of new products by 20%
to 30% higher than the current mainstream products, then the new technology
will be worthy of promoting. OLED is now much higher than this limit, thus
leading to a big marketing promotion difficulty.
For example, a 55-inch LCD TV and now the price is
about 8000 yuan to 10,000 yuan, but if it is the same size OLED TV prices reach
two or three million.
Zhang Yu said the industry had generally
considered the color OLED, performance and other indicators point of view is better
than TFT LCD, but because OLED is self-luminous, theoretically, OLED should be
more energy-efficient. But because technology is now not mature enough yet;
OLED screen does not reflect the energy-saving advantages, especially need to
break the bottleneck in large-size, including OLED screen life, material and so
on.
However, Zhang Yu also said that although there
will be a variety of display technologies coexist, including OLED, laser display,
virtual display. But in the long term, OLED is the mainstream of development,
only need about 10 years from now on, but the current market is still the
mainstream for TFT LCD display panel technology.
It is noteworthy that Samsung recently is reducing
the OLED investment and will focus on promoting the quantum dot technology. In
this regard, Zhang Yu said, Samsung and LG's technology is not the same, LG
uses a white light technology with more cost-competitive; and quantum dot
technology itself is resolved backlight technology for the display and no
revolutionary change, is by quantum films to enhance the entire color
saturation, to do better in backlight, making the screen to reach the standard
of the OLED display.
It is understood that the BOE is currently
in the Ordos has 5.5-generation AMOLED small and medium size production lines,
and 8.5-generation large-size production lines in Hefei, offering 55-inch ultra
HD AMOLED display; in OLED technology, BOE go RGB technology routes in small
dimensions area, in large size area, BOE go white light technology routes. BOE just
released the country's first self-developed 55-inch 4K × 2K curved AMOLED
display.
Zhang Yu said, the BOE is working with domestic terminal manufacturers to explore the depth of cooperation OLED aspects, there are samples in the certification process now. In addition to the TFT LCD display and the display hardware, BOE future will be extended and vertical integration of upstream and downstream in industry chain, early next year, will launch its own brand of end products, and supporting software to do business together to develop innovative applications to end customers and the introduction of financial, medical and other system solutions.
